Meet T.J. Short, Author.

A few years ago, I had the pleasure to read and review T.J. Short’s book Sherri’s Song. I enjoyed this book greatly. I was only nature that I wanted to get to talk to T.J. about his writing career. He was very kind enough to allow me to pick his brain. I am sure that you will enjoy this interview as much as I do.

When did you first start writing?

I started professional writing in 2004 and finished my first novel in 2005.

What was/is your motivation in writing your books?

 Thus far I've been writing about things that capture my interest and ignite a passion inside of me.

What do you find most challenging about writing?

 Making sure all the nuances of the plotline work.

What is most challenging about being an independent author?

 It is most difficult in getting major distribution.

Tell me about some of the people you’ve met while working on your books?

 I've met individual people from all walks of life. Some of them in the literary industry itself, such as independent others, agents, publishers and book club members. I've also had the opportunity to meet people associated with other professional organizations and clergy.

How would (someone) describe your writing style?

 I know you should be aware of the flatterer, but some have compared me to Mark Twain and Charles Dickens.

What do you do when you aren’t working on your book? Hobbies and so forth?

 I coach pee wee football, read, and watch sports on television.

Is there another book in the horizon?

 Yes. I have the sequel to both novels in the final stages.

What networking do you do that you feel helps your writing in business?

 I talk with people that I meet and always try to be friendly and open. Word of mouth is a powerful tool.

What’s your strategy with your writings, in general?

 I write to make people think and have an introspection on an issue. I also want them to learn about issues that they have no knowledge.

What’s the best thing a writer can give to his/her readers?

 A good story that entertains and enlighten.

Say if one of my readers want to write a book but don't know where to start, what advice do you have to offer them?

 Pick an issue and ask who, what, when, where, and why.

What has been your strategy for marketing your books?

 The internet and flyers.

Name some of the writers whom you look up to and why?

 Richard Wright. He wrote in the Civil Rights era when blacks were becoming established on    the American literature scene. He made a tremendous impact on African American Literature. I love his work.

Lastly, what's next for you in the writing world?

 Poetry and children books. I have some things in the work.
